BASCD awards its highest honour

The British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry (BASCD) is an alliance of individual members with an interest in population oral health. Honorary membership is awarded if a member is nominated from BASCD Council and gains two thirds majority vote at the AGM.

The recent BASCD Summer Scientific Meeting and AGM, held in Glasgow was the first in-person conference since 2019. The conference theme ‘Build Back Better: Inclusion, Integration and Innovation’ attracted a maximum attendance and provided an excellent setting for two nominations and subsequent awards of honorary membership presented to:

Dr Jenny Godson MBE, former National Lead for Child Oral Health Improvement, Office for Health Improvement and Disparities at the Department of Health and Social Care.

Professor Andrew Rugg-Gunn, Emeritus Professor of Newcastle University, and founder of the WHO Collaborating Centre to strengthen research capacity and policy implementation in the area of diet, nutrition and oral health.

Albert Yeung, BASCD President, presented both awards stating “Honorary membership is the highest honour BASCD can give to its members to acknowledge their excellent contribution. Both Jenny and Andrew have received overwhelming support and I am delighted they will continue to enjoy the privileges of membership of the association.”
