Policy on Water Fluoridation
As the specialist society for dental public health, BASCD is concerned with promoting the oral health of the entire community. The addition of tiny quantities of fluoride (1 part per million) to water supplies is an effective public health measure for improving dental health. Wherever water fluoridation has been introduced, the oral health of the population is better. Water fluoridation is an ideal vehicle to reach those people who cannot avail themselves of dental services. It requires no change in behaviour to acquire the benefits. It therefore has a major role to play in improving oral health and reducing health inequalities.
